How to Measure Your Space and Size a 3D-Printed Storage Box

Measure a drawer, desk or cabinet, turn it into outer box dimensions, and leave room to take items in and out.

When you adjust a model on boxesmodel, length, width and height are the outer dimensions of the box. Measure the space the box may occupy first, then decide how big the box itself should be.

1. Measure the space available

Measure the inside length, width and height of the drawer or cabinet with a tape measure or calipers, reading at the narrowest point. Drawer slides, handle screws, door hinges and the shelf above all reduce the usable space.

2. Leave room to put the box in and take it out

The box's outer size should be smaller than the measured space, with enough margin around it to put the box in and lift it out; if you take items from the top, leave finger room above the box too.

3. Check the clearance your items need

Walls, floor and dividers all take up interior space, so the interior clearance is smaller than the outer size. When storing specific items, measure their largest outline and check the clear width and depth notes under Specifications on the model page.

4. Multi-part and lidded models

Clearances between lids, drawers and matching parts are controlled by each model's structure rules and update together when you change the outer size. Use the complete set of parts from the same download, and do not mix sizes or versions.

5. Confirm with a test print

Printers, filament and slicer settings affect the real size. When dimensions are close to the limit, print the key mating parts or a short sample first, and print the full set once it fits and comes out easily.
