04 / PRINT & ASSEMBLY

Printing and assembly

Check slicing and fit after downloading.

  1. 10 printed parts: 1 box, 1 flip lid, 2 twist tongues (4 mm thick / 12 mm wide / 28.35 mm arm), 2 shoulder sleeve retaining posts (Ø6 / 4.7 mm shoulder / Ø12 × 4 head), 2 lift-and-turn key pins (Ø4 / 17.4 mm shaft / Ø10 × 3 head / 6 × 1.8 × 0.6 direction ridge / 6 × 2.4 × 2.5 cross key / two 1.6 × 2 × 1.2 locating teeth under the head), 1 one-piece printed rear hinge axle (Ø10 / 164 mm shaft / 167 mm total with the Ø14 × 3 left head), 1 printed right retaining cap (Ø14 × 6 / Ø5.8 head counterbore 3.2). The dedicated axle, pins and retainers all come with the 10 STL/10 STEP files, with no cut metal shafts or machined parts.
  2. Required purchases: 3 × DIN 912 M3×12 mm socket head cap screws (coarse 0.5, fully threaded 12, head Ø5.5 / height 3 / tool H2.5; 2 shoulder posts, 1 rear cap); 3 × DIN 934 M3 nuts (5.5 across flats / 2.4 thick / coarse 0.5; 2 shoulder posts, 1 rear axle). Selected in-stock items: Vital Parts HSC912-M3-12-A4 and HN934-M3-C6-BZP; product pages checked on 2026-10-11; do not substitute larger heads or thicker lock nuts at either end. Tools: a 2.5 mm hex key and needle-nose pliers to hold nuts, for initial assembly/washing only; the key pins release by hand day to day with no tools or consumables.
  3. Outer size 180 × 140 × 70 mm including the front deck, rear hinge, axle head and cap; main case outer width 164 / clear depth 88.15 mm, long tool compartment clear width 44 mm, 2 secondary sections each 110.4 clear wide / 42.475 clear deep, clear height 54.55 mm; fixed software references: cold tools 32 × 60 × 20 mm and closed small boxes Ø22 × 18 mm per compartment; measure by the actual maximum envelope; brand fit is not promised.
  4. Initial assembly with the box empty: drop two M3 nuts into the hex pockets from under the front deck; fit the two twist tongues over the shoulder posts, place the posts with tongues on the deck, and insert the M3×12 from above into the lock nut. The post rests on the deck top with single-side clearance above and below the tongue; the screw does not clamp the tongue directly. Put the third M3 nut in the side window at the right end of the rear axle and hold it by hand, close the three knuckles and insert the fully printed axle from the left; the right cap seats against the axle end from the right, and an M3×12 locks into the end nut through the right counterbore. The left axle head and right cap each stop it backing out; needs one axle length of space at the side for assembly.
  5. Daily closing: support the case bottom, close the lid and turn both tongues toward the lid's front edge; insert each pin with its cross key and head ridge along X aligned with the keyhole, lift 1.2 mm, turn 90° so they run along Y, and press back into the twin tooth slots under the head. When locked, the teeth enter 0.85 mm and the tail cross key top is 2 mm from the sleeve bottom; after lifting 1.2 mm the teeth are clear while the cross key is 0.8 mm from the sleeve bottom, so it can turn a full 90°. To open the lid, lift each pin 1.2 mm, turn 90° to line up with the keyhole and pull it out, then turn the left tongue +90° / right tongue −90° outward, and swing the lid 0–180° by hand. The two key pins are loose removable parts; keep them on the desk; not fully captive; do not carry by the lid; no vibration/drop anti-opening or sealing is promised.
  6. Maintenance: empty the items and open the lid as usual; remove the rear cap's M3 screw/printed cap from the right, then withdraw the whole printed axle from the left while holding the end nut. Remove the two shoulder post screws to take out the posts and tongues, supporting the nuts. Rear axle Ø10 with a Ø10.7 hole; tongue Ø6 shoulder in a Ø6.7 hole, 0.35 mm clearance above and below; pin Ø4 in a Ø4.7 central hole, X keyway 6.7 × 3.1 mm, fixed sleeve OD11; the under-head tooth pocket has single-side clearance G in X and G/2 in Y so it does not touch the round hole at maximum clearance; test-print to check the feel; the locking cross key cannot pass straight up through the hole; there is a release angle window due to clearance, so it is not claimed to release at exactly 90°.
  7. Printing and limits: box base down; with the lid plate horizontal the knuckles are below the plate, so support the plate underside and the hinge holes; review supports with the tongue flat face down, shoulder posts upright, and key pins by their cross keys and under-head teeth. Slice the rear axle lying flat and rotate it so the side nut window faces up; review supports along the long axle and its round section; stand the cap upright along its axis when slicing. The thinnest point at the shoulder post through hole is 1.3 mm and about 1.65 mm at the rear axle end nut window; slicing and an interface sample are required. Check slicing before printing; before use, check actual friction/retention, printed bearing load, material strength, life and waterproofing.

Import into your slicer in millimeters and check build volume, orientation and supports for each part. Test-print lids, drawers and connectors first, and print the full set once the fit is confirmed.
